TCS’s HyperVault plans a ₹70,000 crore investment to build a 1 GW AI data center campus in Hyderabad. This massive bet signals India's legacy conglomerates are now building the foundational AI compute layer. The liquid-cooled facility will host compute workloads for frontier AI companies and hyperscalers alike.
How We Got Here
TCS launched HyperVault in October last year specifically to develop AI-focused data centers across India. Global investment firm TPG later committed up to ₹18,000 crore in equity and debt to scale HyperVault's initial data center ambitions.
The Numbers
- The 264-acre campus in Hyderabad will be built in phases, eventually becoming one of India's largest AI infrastructure sites.
- It's designed for high-density, liquid-cooled compute workloads, incorporating green energy and water-neutral principles.
- HyperVault has a partnership with OpenAI to build the latter’s AI infrastructure within India.
- This follows Reliance's plan to invest ₹10 lakh crore in AI over seven years, including a 168 MW AI data center in Jamnagar.
- HCLTech and L&T are also building AI data centers through their subsidiaries, Sarvam.AI (Odisha) and Vyoma.AI, respectively.
What Happens Next
🇮🇳 Why This Matters for India
For Bangalore and Hyderabad-based AI startups, this means future access to high-density local compute, potentially accelerating product development without reliance on overseas cloud infrastructure.
The Take
This ₹70,000 crore bet positions TCS, alongside other Indian giants, to control the literal horsepower of India’s AI future. For startups, this means a domestic compute alternative and potentially less reliance on AWS or Azure in the long run.
